International Friends of Sabeel

Be a living witness for truth, justice, and peace.

"Speak out for those who cannot speak."
Proverbs 31:8

International Friends of Sabeel (IFOS) was organized out of the desire by members of the international community to support the work of Sabeel through education, advocacy, conferences, solidarity visits, partner-to-partner projects, and financial contributions. Regional chapters have been established creating a network of friends throughout the world who work in partnership with Sabeel to bring about a just and durable peace for Palestine and Israel.

By becoming a member of Friends of Sabeel you will receive our quarterly newsletter, Cornerstone, regular updates, and information on local, regional, and international events and conferences. Join us as partners in a community dedicated to the work of justice, peace, and reconciliation.

Educate
One of the key roles of Friends of Sabeel is to educate the world community about the realities of the Israeli Occupation and to call for its immediate end. Sabeel speakers, resource materials, bibliographies, and Sabeel publications are available for education in churches, universities, conferences, and area organizations. The Sabeel website provides updates and links to other organizations. Sabeel also hosts visits in Israel/Palestine through our Ahlan wa Sahlan program (Arabic for "welcome"). This program aims to give visitors an accurate depiction of current events, and features venue options varying from a contemporary Way of the Cross to an evening of Palestinian food and music.

Advocate
Friends of Sabeel advocate for peace with justice by non-violent means; with government officials, through their local media representatives, public meetings and events. Boycotts, solidarity demonstrations, sending fact-finding delegations, and participation in local events are other ways in which our friends can advocate to end the occupation of Palestine and to help bring about a just peace in Palestine and Israel.

Participate
Friends of Sabeel contribute in building a community of mutual respect and trust through supporting local partnership projects, volunteering, joining in solidarity visits, fund-raising, lobbying, and advocating for peace with justice in substantial ways. Whatever your gifts, your help is needed and your efforts appreciated.

Canadian Friends of Sabeel

Since its inception, Canadian Friends of Sabeel (CFOS) has continued to advocate for a just peace in the Middle East, in conjunction with our partner, the Sabeel Ecumenical Centre for Palestinian liberation theology in Jerusalem. Sabeel's Principles for a Just Peace in Palestine-Israel of last year outlines clearly the requisites of such a just peace. At the request of Prime Minister Chretien, CFOS submitted a proposal for Canada to initiate justice in the region.

The spiraling cycle of violence of recent weeks is the inevitable outcome of an oppressive occupation of the West Bank and Gaza strip. We deplore Israeli and Palestinian terrorism, and note that it is rooted in the primary violence which is the Israeli occupation.

The protection of civilians under occupation is governed by the Fourth Geneva Convention. Israel's actions are in violation of the Convention on numerous counts. The renewal in recent days of Israeli air and ground attacks on civilian population centres is deplorable, and may represent a "grave breach" of the Convention constituting war crimes.

Canada, as well as other countries, as a high contracting party of the Fourth Geneva Convention has a clear legal imperative under Article 1 to implement international humanitarian law in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Israel's willful killings, torture, destruction of homes and property, population transfer across the green line to settlements, and numerous collective punishments against the Palestinian population are further violations of the Convention.

The Swiss government has called a conference of the High Contracting Parties of the Convention in Geneva on December 5th 2001. We expect Canada to commit to taking every step required to meet its legal obligations and to fully support strict adherence to the Convention. This could include placing international monitors in the region, steps toward which the World Council of Churches has taken.

Furthermore, we cannot allow extremists to take just causes as their own and thereby bring about more catastrophes and loss of life. The people of the region expect Canada to be evenhanded and to let justice, goodwill, and freedom prevail. We expect Canada to at least meet our commitments under international humanitarian law and hopefully utilize our unique standing to be agents of justice.
